I have been in autistic burnout for the past six months. It has been a very big learning process. Through this learning process, I have come to realise what things have helped me. I have created this guide from my personal experience. I hope you can use it as a guide for what gifts may be appropriate (and very worthwhile) for anyone you know that is currently in autistic burnout. These suggestions may be valuable for people with other disabilities/chronic illnesses/neurodivergence too.
Weighted blankets, lap pads or plushies - compression can help soothe sensory sensitivities and offer comfort.
Fidget toys - burnout can increase self-harming stimming (at least in my experience) and fidget toys can be a great alternative.
Meal service vouchers (Hello Fresh, Uber Eats, etc.) - so helpful when energy and executive functioning levels are low.
Sweet treats - a lovely sweet treat goes a long way!
Household help (cleaning, home cooked meals, laundry, etc.) - again, low energy and executive functioning levels are a struggle, so any help around the house goes a long way and is very much appreciated.
A homemade gift - a low cost option that really shows your thoughtfulness and love for your friend.
Offer a lift - your burnt out friend may be unable to drive (like me) or too overwhelmed or tired to drive. If you are available, offer to give them a lift somewhere, whether to a medical appointment, to the grocery store, or even out for lunch.
Give your time - this is probably the best gift you can give. Simply offering your time and company shows how much you care and are there for your friend.
